Krista | Central Iowa Senior Photography

“Life is short and opportunities are rare and we have to be vigilant in protecting them and not only the
opportunities to succeed but the opportunity to laugh, to see the enchantment in the world and, to live.
Because life doesn’t owe us anything as a matter of fact I think that we owe something to the world.”
-Haley Scott, One Tree Hill

I know that the quote above is from a TV show, but it really is appropriate for high school grads! I loved it. There is so much opportunity that awaits all of my senior clients, and it always makes me so excited to see what journey they’ll begin after high school. Krista has a bright and promising future ahead of her. I first met this beautiful and sweet senior when she applied for my model program. I was lucky enough to photograph her multiple times on my model team, and really got to know her as a very loving, talented young lady. She is also an athlete, and loves playing volleyball. In fact, she loves playing just about any sport, as she’s quick to tell you, but really has succeeded in volleyball. Krista is outgoing and makes friends easily; she is also very close to her sister. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to the latest country music on the radio, and working as a babysitter (she loves children).

It was very hot on the day of our session, but we were able to plan both indoor and outdoor locations. Both options highlighted her big smile, her athleticism, and her personable spirit. She loves nature, and so we incorporated a relaxing garden session, as well as an urban, modern city look. Her senior wardrobe included classic colors like red and white, and of course, she looked stunning. Thanks Krista, for being part of my model team. I am so thrilled for your future!

Mariah | Central Iowa Senior Photographer

I knew from the moment I met her, that Mariah and I were going to get along well. She has a naturally sweet spirit and big heart, and was actually part of my senior model team. In fact, she went on to become a finalist in a national model competition that my studio participated in. She is a devoted big sister, and also a big fan of country music! In addition, she is a very strong soccer player, and her team went on the become state champions. These days, she is settling nicely into college life, and I am so proud of the bright and kind young woman she has become.

Mariah is a very stylish gal, and one thing (among many) that she did exceptionally well, was choose a show-stopping shoe: a sky high cognac wedge! Oftentimes, seniors put together an incredible wardrobe, but forget that a shoe can really complete an outfit. I really love the options you can find at a site like Sole Society, which I recently discovered. Nope, this isn’t a sponsored post, I just really love the site! It has search functions to help you search by heel height, width, and color, which means you can find the right shoe for any of your wardrobe choices. As always, I’m available to help you choose any of your outfits, or to help steer you to the best resources available for clothes and yes, even footwear!

Celebrating Past Seniors | Central Iowa Photographer

I love social media because of they way it brings friends, old and new, together. I know that social media can be negative, and there are so many political opinions flying around on Facebook and Twitter, it can feel overwhelming. But I love to focus on the positives, and one positive is that it allows me to keep in touch with all of my past senior clients. Believe it or not, I genuinely love finding out what my seniors are up to, and the things they’ve gone on to succeed at after graduation. It also brings me a ton of joy when I go through older images and can remember the incredible young people who have crossed my path, and for whom I’ve been able to play a small role in their lives.

Nikki was one of my past seniors, who came to me from the Ballard School District, and today, I wanted to share her images. I loved working with her, and really appreciated her sweet spirit. She has a gorgeous singing voice, and comes from a very musical family. I also did senior portraits for her older brother, and was thrilled to cross paths with their family again. During her shoot, we really tried to capture the different aspects of her personality; Nikki loves cats, reading, and is passionate about her family.

If you’re one of my previous senior or family clients, please connect with me on social media HERE…I’d sure love to keep in touch!

Elyse | Senior Girls | Central Iowa Portraiture

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.” –Mark Twain

As a senior photographer, the young people I meet always inspire me. I am inspired to smile a little more, savor life’s moments, and be more and more creative in how I document each senior. Elyse was on my senior model team, and was such a joy to work with. She was a member of the marching band at her school, and currently has a blog where she loves to write about her life. Elyse adds that she loves music, her faith in God, and living a healthy lifestyle. I admire her strength and her sweet spirit.

For her senior session, we opted for an outdoor, on-location shoot, and we ended up with the perfect lighting. We alternated between pretty fields and even one indoor location, to give her a well-rounded and multi-faceted shoot. I’ve found that all of my senior clients love a variety of backgrounds and styles, because of the many things you use your senior photos for: announcements, wall hangings, decor, invitations, and albums. Are you wondering why a professional is worth the money? I have written up a few key reasons right HERE for you to read. I’m also happy to answer any questions you may have!

Katie | Senior Girls | Central Iowa Senior Photographer

The memories you make during high school stay with you forever. The
friendships and memories never really fade, but you change and grow into
the person you were meant to be. -Unknown

Katie is not just beautiful, (inside and out), she is also an amazing athlete, very smart and caring, and a strong young woman. When she was twelve, she overcame a traumatic event and overcame it with strength and grace. Even though she had to undergo multiple mouth surgeries, she has remained strong and faithful, and says, “I was made fun of, laughed at, and stared at. It was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever been through, but I learned a lot about myself through this time. I learned I was strong and beautiful.” She has carried this confidence with her in the years since. During high school, Katie played softball and says it is her favorite sport. She played first base, and says that softball was one of the best parts of high school. When she’s not focused on her schooling, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and sleeping in!

After her high school graduation, she attended DMACC for two years to accomplish her general education classes and then continued on to Iowa State University. Katie hopes to major in Adult, Child, & Family Services. “I came to this decision by talking with my parents and close family friends about what I see myself doing in the future”, she explains, “They helped and supported me through my decision-making process and I can’t thank them enough for that.” Lastly, she wants to be remembered by her classmates as someone who was friendly, outgoing, and funny. “I chose Twyla to do my senior portraits because I had seen her previous work and loved it. I knew she could work with me the way I wanted to”.

Katie, I am so proud of the way you have overcome struggle and found beauty in the midst of obstacles. You are a strong and wonderful young lady, and I loved being your photographer!

Senior Girls Flower Crown Photo Session

It was a blustery spring morning when we headed out to McHose Park to photograph these five beautiful high school senior models. They had been anxiously awaiting this first photo session of the spring. This was the first time some of the senior girls had met each other. The girls all go to different high schools in the area. They are each so friendly that it didn’t take long for them to become friends. We piled into a couple cars and headed to park, where we were planning to have our photo shoot. We were hopeful that it would soon warm up.

As we arrived at the park, we found the beautiful weeping willow tree just waiting for us. It’s limbs were lush and hung to the ground, swinging back and forth in the breeze.  It was the perfect backdrop for the flower crowns and simple dresses. The wind whispered through the branches and we began making gorgeous pictures. Each girl had a chance to wear two different flower crowns and had many turns in front of the camera. We had a selection of very large flower crowns and some simple, smaller ones to choose from. While waiting for their turn to model for the camera, the girls huddled under heavy quilts. For this session, we were focusing on photographing each girl, however, we  had time for some group shots, too.

The girls did a great job and had a fun time. Each girl’s confidence shone through in these beautiful images and I as so happy to share them here.

It was a very cold day, but the girls stuck it out.  These five senior girls are so much fun to photograph. I have had the privilege of getting to know them through my model program, and I can’t wait for our next photo session.
